Are you a college or graduate student looking for an internship?

Gemeinschaft home maintains collaborative relationships with academic institutions across the area, bringing students from a range of backgrounds to Gemeinschaft Home. Whether you are studying criminal justice, law, sociology, psychology, history, art/music, writing/journalism,  or virtually any field of study, Gemeinschaft Home offers opportunities to engage and assist a diverse group of individuals, while also providing invaluable experience in the day-to-day operation of an established nonprofit organization.

​Internship Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who is eligible to apply for an internship position?
Any student currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in the local area (Harrisonburg/Rockingham County).  Internships must be formally approved by your academic program advisor in advance. 

2. What types of internships are available?
Internship positions are created on a continual basis, according to organizational need. Interns work on the program side of the organization (curriculum development, counseling, substance abuse, group therapy), as well as on the administrative side (research, publication design, grant writing, website/social media). 

3. How many credits will I receive for this internship?
It varies, depending on your institution and degree program, but usually is the equivalent of one college course--or 3 credits (units). 

4. Will I be paid for my work as an intern?
No, internship positions are unpaid. (unless stipulated/advertised otherwise, based on funding availability).

5. How long (how much time) is an internship?
Most students complete their internship work during the course of one college semester, working roughly 150 hours (depending on the requirements of your institution).

6. How will I be graded for participating in an internship? 
It varies, depending on your institution and degree program requirements, but all interns will receive a final evaluation report. ​

Volunteer

Whether you can spend a few hours a week or one afternoon per year, please consider becoming a Gemeinschaft Home volunteer. Sharing your time is an invaluable resource that helps to keep our doors open and to sustain our mission.

  • clerical/office help (answering telephones, stuffing envelopes)
  • providing transportation for residents
  • tutoring (GED preparation, writing, reading)
  • leading a basic life-skills class (budgeting/bank account management, obtaining/managing credit)
  • offering a jobs workshop (preparing a resume, filling out job applications,  writing a job letter, attending an interview)
  • teaching a technology workshop (basic computer skills, using the internet, learning how to use mobile/smart phones)
  • facilitating a bible study or reading group
